Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently highlighted that peace was nearly achieved during the Istanbul negotiations in 2022. Speaking at a press conference held at the United Nations headquarters, Lavrov stated, “At that time, the then-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, instructed Ukraine not to sign, and they walked away from the table.”

During his address at the UN, Lavrov criticised the international community for its failure to respond adequately to the situation in Gaza. He pointed out that none of the UN Security Council resolutions concerning Gaza had been implemented. Lavrov condemned the attacks on 7 October as unacceptable and labelled Israel’s actions in Gaza as collective punishment.

Lavrov argued that collective punishment is a violation of international humanitarian law. He asserted, “You cannot combat violations with other violations.” Furthermore, Lavrov accused the office of the UN Secretary-General of applying double standards. He claimed that while the UN is quick to blame Russia when it comes to Ukraine, it refrains from explicitly stating who is responsible for the attacks on Gaza.

Lavrov emphasised the necessity for UN staff to remain impartial to all member states.

Addressing a question about the rising tensions in the Middle East and the potential involvement of Iran, Lavrov stated, “Iran does not want to escalate tensions. Israel does.” He mentioned that while Hezbollah has been acting with restraint, the United States and Israel appear to be inciting conflict, aiming to start a “comprehensive war.” Lavrov urged the West to exert all necessary efforts to de-escalate the situation.

Lavrov also spoke about the situation in Ukraine, recalling that if the Minsk Agreements had been implemented, Ukraine would have maintained its 1991 borders, excluding Crimea. He criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace proposal as one-sided and unacceptable. Lavrov reiterated that the peace talks held in Istanbul in 2022 were on the brink of success until UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson intervened.

Lavrov remarked, “If you stop pumping weapons into Ukraine, the war will end.”

Lavrov condemned NATO’s policies as unfair and aggressive, advocating instead for an Eurasian security model. He described this model as one based on equality and respect for the interests of all parties involved.

When asked about the potential implications for US-Russia relations if former President Donald Trump or his vice-presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, who opposes aid to Ukraine, were elected, Lavrov responded, “We are ready to work with any leader chosen by the American people.” He noted that despite the severe economic and diplomatic sanctions imposed on Russia during Trump’s tenure, dialogue channels remained open at the highest levels.

Lavrov contrasted this with the current US administration, stating that there is no existing dialogue and stressing that any future relations must be based on mutual respect and equality.

In summary, Sergey Lavrov’s statements highlight significant geopolitical tensions and underline Russia’s stance on various international issues. The near-success of the Istanbul peace talks, thwarted by external intervention, remains a pivotal moment in recent history. Lavrov’s comments also reflect ongoing criticisms of international responses to conflicts and underscore the importance of impartiality and dialogue in international relations.
