Northern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar has traveled to New York to meet with United Nations officials, seeking to secure backing for ending the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community. Tatar’s discussions will focus on key issues such as establishing direct flights, promoting international trade, enhancing global contacts, and lifting the long-standing embargo on Northern Cyprus.

The Northern Cyprus Presidency confirmed that President Tatar is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. These meetings come after a recent six-month fact-finding mission led by Angela Holguin, the UN chief’s personal representative, aimed at assessing the situation on the island.

Tatar’s visit also coincides with his firm rejection of Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis’ call to resume negotiations in Crans-Montana. Tatar referred to the failed talks in 2017, stressing that the Turkish Cypriot side would not engage in negotiations unless their sovereignty and equal status were fully recognized. He also emphasized the critical role of Türkiye as a guarantor power, warning that any further discussions could jeopardize Turkish Cypriot rights and sovereignty.

During his time in New York, Tatar intends to continue advocating for international recognition of Northern Cyprus, reaffirming his commitment to break the island’s diplomatic isolation.
