Uşak, a city in Turkey, has recently made headlines by breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest tarhana soup ever made. The event, organised by Uşak Municipality, took place at Yeşil Karaağaç Recreation and Picnic Area, drawing significant attention from locals and media alike.
Early in the morning, the festival grounds were bustling with activity as 33 chefs began the monumental task of preparing the giant cauldron of tarhana soup. The cauldron, specifically designed for this record attempt, required a crane to handle its massive lid, highlighting the scale of this endeavour.
Guinness World Records Turkey Adjudicator and Representative Şeyda Subaşı Gemici oversaw the proceedings, ensuring that all international guidelines were meticulously followed. After approximately six hours of cooking, the soup was ready, and the measurements were taken to confirm the new record.
On stage, Gemici announced that the previous record held by the Netherlands, which stood at 26,658 liters, had been surpassed. The new record, set by Uşak Municipality, was an impressive 30,292 liters. This remarkable achievement was officially recognized, and the certificate was presented to Uşak’s Mayor Özkan Yalım.
In his speech, Mayor Yalım expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the preparation and execution of this record-breaking event. He emphasised that the primary goal was to promote Uşak and its cultural heritage, particularly the traditional tarhana soup. “Our aim is to make Uşak known worldwide. The fact that we are now the holders of a Guinness World Record for the largest tarhana soup is a testament to our dedication,” said Yalım.
Following the official announcements and celebrations, the massive quantities of tarhana soup were distributed to the attendees, providing a delicious conclusion to the festival. This event not only showcased Uşak’s culinary traditions but also brought the community together in a shared sense of pride and accomplishment.
The previous record, set in 2009 in Poeldijk, Netherlands, involved the preparation of 26,658 litres of vegetable soup by DENK Communicatie. This enormous quantity included 17,500 litres of water, 7,440 kilograms of tomatoes, and other vegetables and seasonings, demonstrating the substantial effort required to set such records.
