French President Emmanuel Macron has urged the international community to halt weapon shipments that may be used in Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. Speaking in an interview with France Inter radio, Macron emphasised the need for a diplomatic resolution to the escalating conflict and called on all parties to prioritise humanitarian efforts over military actions.
France Stands Against Weapon Shipments to Israel
In his address, Macron clearly outlined France’s stance on the issue. He stated that France is not providing weapons to Israel for its operations in Gaza. This comes amid heightened international scrutiny over the Israeli offensive, which has drawn widespread condemnation due to the severe impact on Palestinian civilians. Macron stressed that any military aid must be conditional on the adherence to international law and the protection of civilians. He called for all countries involved to ensure that no arms contribute to the escalation of violence in Gaza.
Prioritising a Diplomatic Solution in the Middle East
Macron underlined that the ultimate solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be political rather than military. According to Macron, “The priority should be to return to a political process that can pave the way for lasting peace in the region.” He highlighted that continued violence only serves to deepen the divide and fuel further extremism, making a peaceful resolution more distant. In this regard, France is calling for an immediate ceasefire and for all sides to come back to the negotiating table.
Criticism of Netanyahu’s Approach
Macron did not shy away from criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly. In a pointed remark, he argued that Israel’s current tactics in the fight against terrorism, particularly the bombing of civilian areas, were misguided. Macron said, “We do not fight terrorism by sacrificing civilian lives.” He voiced concern that Israel’s military operations are ignoring key international norms and that this approach could have long-term negative consequences for Israel’s own security. Macron noted that Israel’s refusal to heed international calls for restraint is a serious mistake, not only for the present situation but for the country’s future.
Warning Against Further Escalation in Lebanon
Turning his attention to the widening conflict in the region, Macron also addressed the growing tensions between Israel and Lebanon. In a stark warning, he said, “Lebanon must not become another Gaza.” This statement reflects concerns that the conflict could spread beyond Gaza, destabilising Lebanon and plunging the region into further chaos. Macron reiterated the need for regional stability and urged all neighbouring countries to resist being drawn into the conflict.
France’s Role in International Mediation
France has consistently positioned itself as a mediator in international conflicts, and Macron’s recent statements align with this tradition. He reaffirmed France’s commitment to working with international partners to broker a ceasefire and to ensure that humanitarian aid can reach the affected civilian population in Gaza. Macron also called on the international community, including major powers like the United States and Russia, to take a more active role in de-escalating the situation.
