The Act’s reach extends beyond the borders of the 27-member bloc, potentially setting a global precedent much like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
This legislative milestone is the result of years of negotiation and refinement. Initially drafted by the European Commission in 2021, the Act underwent several significant amendments before being endorsed by EU lawmakers and, subsequently, by member states. This process reflects the EU’s commitment to crafting a robust legal framework that addresses the multifaceted challenges posed by AI.
