Parents across the UK are being encouraged to act now to secure £1,331 in annual Child Benefit support. The HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has highlighted that over one million families have already claimed this benefit using their new digital service, which launched earlier this year.
The benefit offers £1,331 annually for the first child and £881 per year for each additional child, providing crucial financial support to families. Claiming early could ensure payments are received in time for a baby’s first Christmas, with processing times as quick as three working days through the digital service.
Streamlined Application Process
Parents can submit their claims online at GOV.UK or via the HMRC app, just 48 hours after registering their baby’s birth. To complete a claim, parents need the child’s birth certificate, their National Insurance number, and bank account details. Claims can also be backdated up to 12 weeks, ensuring no financial loss.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, noted, “Having a baby is a busy and expensive time, but claiming Child Benefit online or via the app means you’ll get cash in your bank account as soon as possible. Claim now and you could get your first payment in time for your baby’s first Christmas.”
Upcoming Increase in Payments
The UK government has confirmed that from April 2025, Child Benefit payments will rise in line with inflation. The increase means:
- £26.05 per week for the eldest or only child (up from £25.60).
- £17.25 per week for younger children (up from £16.95).
This change aligns with the government’s broader commitment to adjusting financial support to reflect cost-of-living pressures. Families with ongoing claims will automatically receive increased payments.
Support for All Families
Child Benefit can be claimed for any number of children, providing vital assistance for households managing rising living costs. Parents are also reminded to update their personal details, such as changes in bank account or address, through the HMRC app or GOV.UK.
With the cost of living continuing to challenge families, this benefit offers timely relief for millions of households. Parents are advised to act swiftly to secure their entitlements and ease financial pressures during the festive season.
